<Swordsmith and sword feature>
藤原吉光、本名福田光雄、明治45年生まれ、昭和7年小山信光に入門、大戦中は海軍受命刀匠として兄と共に鍛刀しました。また吉光刀匠の刀は切れ味に定評があり、肥前刀の伝統である鍛えの美し さと、特に刃紋の働きが巧妙であるため人気があり、美術刀剣はもとより、扱い易い居合抜刀用の刀に至るまで幅広く製作したことでも名を上げた刀匠です。
本作、居合用にバランス良く作られたと物と思われますが、良く鍛えられた地鉄に刃紋の働きが見事で、直刃が多い吉光刀匠の作品の中では貴重です、鑑賞用としても良いでしょう。 長さも有り良い拵に入った逸品です。
Swordsmith Fujiwara Yoshimitysu藤原吉光、real name Fukuda Mitsuo 本名福田光雄 was born in 1912 and learned ubnder Koyama Nobumitsu.
He worked for Navy as a Jumei swordsmith with his brother before and during WWII.
His swords were known for beautiful Bizen Kitae with wonderful Hamon Hataraki which many people loved and tresured as art swords, at the same time he had created many of practical swords - the sharpness of the blade was noted by many people.
This piece was obviously made as an Iai Shinken - a very light, well balanced also tightly fitted with Koshirae mountings.
With such a beautiful Ji and Hamon, it is also suitable for a display piece.

<Appearance>
体配は鎬造り庵棟、身幅重共尋常、反り頃合いで鳥居反り、中鋒。茎は生で切り鑢がかかる、茎尻は栗尻と成る。
彫り物は片チリの棒樋がハバキ下に掻き流しと成る。
It has an ordinary blade weight and a width, Shinogi-zukuri, Iori-mune 鎬造り庵棟. The curve is Toriizori style and the blade top is Nakamine 鳥居反り中鋒.
There are Katachiri Bohi(thick groove which extends to shinogi,leaves flat space only on Mune side) on both side of the blade.
The Tang is Ubu 生(original) and has Kiri file marks 切り鑢. Nakago end is Kurijiri shape 栗尻形

<Hada - Forging>
地鉄は杢目肌が詰み、地沸付く。
The jihada (body of the sword) is a tightly forged Mokume. Coarse Jinie(darkish crystal)granule attaches on the surface.

<Hamon - Temper patterns>
刃紋は互の目乱れで、匂深く小沸良く付く。刃中、足長くよく入り、砂流し金筋が入る。帽子は刃紋成りに入り小丸に返る。
The Hamon is Gunome Midare and Nioi Fukaku(The interior of temper is filled in with deep Nioi ) with rich Konie.
In the Hamon Suna-nagashi shows it's long flowing sand-like pattern abundantly while Kinsuji(whitish gold line) runs through along the temper line.
Boshi- temper line of the tip is Midarekomi(wavy) with rich Hakikake activities and turns back to a gentle curl called Komaru.

<Habaki-Metal collar>
